Flying & Photograhic Equipment Used
Sony PD170 Video Camera - When video capture quality, format continuity, and equipment reliability is critical to your production then the PD170 offers you high quality video capture , balanced audio inputs that are line/mic level switchable, a professional format that integrates SMPTE compatible time code, and excellent low-light shooting capability for those evening shots. The camera weighs about 5 pounds fully loaded so it is still light enough to use while flying.
Sports Bullet or Cigar Cameras
- These cameras are great for wing mounting on your trike, they come with an optional 10 m cable which is really useful for reaching the camera on the wing tip. We mounted three of these on the camera trike, attached to a switch box with a LAN C remote control device. See
the how to section at Trike

Manfrotto Camera Support - Good tripods make the difference between amateur and professional results . We used the 525MV tripod along 501?? head for its positive fluid movement which provides exceptionally smooth control. The quick-release sliding plate makes it really quick to mount the camera. The two stage lightweight high tensile aluminum tripod is extremely rigid and stable.
Nikon
D70 DSLR Stills Camera - Nikon D70 DSLR Stills Camera - Zero power up time and plenty of innovations that make photography with the D70 faster, easier and better. The D70 is designed for all photographers, from experienced to amateur and beginners. The camera takes great pictures for a beginner like me. I also used a moose polariser and warm up filter to great effect on sunny bright days.
Canon 20D DSLR Stills Camera - Featuring an 8.2 Mmegapixel CMOS Sensor, and 5 fps the EOS 20D is a
remarkable machine. We used it for a lot of our ground based action photogrpahy, like the Goped Sequences.
Canon XL1 Video Camera - Primarly used as a backup camera, it is too large and heavy to carry to film while flying.
The shoulder support was invaluable for movie shots while walking through the corn fields. It is still the only prosumer camcorder to offer an interchangeable lens system but the low light performance was poor.
Goped Big Foot Scooters - We chose the Bigfoot for its low weight, less than 10 Kgs, its ability to fold up and be carried on the back, 10-inch pneumatic tyres and high ground clearance for off road use. They proved highly reliable and the box of spare we took for them was not opened. Note that they do not have suspension, which was not a problem on most surfaces except when rocky, then you feel like your fillings are going to come out! Incredibly its one horsepower engine gets you to speeds over 20 miles an hour. My hang gliding instructor told me never to fly any higher than you are prepared to fall, with Gopeds never go any faster. We rode them as fast as they could go and by shifting our weight to the rear smoothed the ride on rough surfaces.
